Ethos
Our aim is to equip the children in our care with the necessary skills to enable them to become well-balanced individuals, sensitive to the needs of others and prepared to give of their best in all they do, both for the local community and society in general.  We do not intend that the school will replace parents in the process of education, rather that we will work in partnership with parents for the benefit of the child. By using our professional experience and expertise, we can together enable all children to achieve to the best of their ability.

We provide an encouraging and nurturing environment where learning opportunities abound. We set high but achievable standards through a range of challenging activities both within the curriculum and beyond. We aspire to develop happy, enthusiastic and inquisitive pupils who are eager to learn. Our ethos is captured in our school motto: ‘Caring, Learning, Achieving’.

The children in the foundation stage and key stage 1 follow the Letters and Sounds phonics scheme as this is a proven systematic programme of phonics teaching recommended by the Department of Education and OFSTED. It is also the scheme the teachers at Rainow prefer.  There is a wide range of reading books for everyone at every stage of their reading, but at an early stage the children mainly follow the Oxford Reading Tree scheme. There are sets of books for children to access in class to read with a teacher in a guided reading session as well as individual books for children to take home.  We also have a well-stocked school library. We like to encourage parents to read with their children every day as it really helps the children to make good progress.

In phonic phases 2 and 3 the children read colour coded books according to their reading levels and pupils are taught in groups according to their progress through the phonic phases. There are various sets of books in school which we use in our guided reading sessions. Each class has its own library and the children can borrow a book from there to read too, alongside the reading book.
